BSARU October Update

Article written for Kelso Life by Seymour Haugh, with news of our new base, a callout in Dunbar and the team's fundraising.

New Base Update

The front and rear garage doors are installed, and we are awaiting delivery of windows and doors to finish the outside of the building before electrician can commence work inside. Water supply work completed ready for connection. Waiting for Scottish Power Networks’ contractor to carry out work to connect us to electricity supply, (ordered ages ago). Groundwork is underway to complete the entrances and disabled parking, but the work at the rear is outstanding. Prioritising work that will allow us to start using the building and reviewing how much of the inside fit we can do with the money at our disposal.  Funding for installation of heat pump and solar panels and completion of the project is now required.

Multi Agency Search

Saturday 10th September, at 0111 hours, saw the team asked to assist Police at Dunbar in the search for a 9 year old child who had been missing from 1900 hours the previous evening. During the day additional resources were called in. In all the search involved, police, a police helicopter, BSARU, Tweed Valley MRT, SARDA Southern Scotland (search dogs), Dunbar Coastguard, RNLI Dunbar Lifeboats, Ochils MRT, and the Search and Rescue Aerial Association – Scotland. There was also a big effort from the local community. The boy was found on Saturday evening thankfully alive.

Fund Raising

The teams most recent fund raising event, held on the 3rd of September, was our Poachers’ Run, part of our Border Reiver Trail Series. A 10 km run going in a loop along the banks of the river Teviot, starting and finishing at the Showground in Kelso. Forty six runners took part with the winner completing the run in 38 minutes 35 seconds. Watch out for the other two events in the series, Raider Run in the Cheviots, and Smuggler Run on the East Lothian Coast, in 2023.
