BSARU December 2024 Update

Article written by Seymour Haugh for the Kelso Life Magazine - updates on the New Base, Activities, Callouts and Fundraising

New Base Update

The Groundwork at the rear of the building is complete. Fencing materials have been purchased for the divide between the Stone Mason’s premises and the team base. Internal work including plumbing and installing water heaters and connecting to electrical supply is ongoing. Installation of ventilation in the garage, as now required by building regulations, is also under way.

Activities

Congratulations to Dog Team Rob and Cairn for successfully passing their Grade 1 Assessment as a search and rescue dog. This is the first formal step to achieving full call out grade status and requires them to successfully complete 5 different “finds” of varying complexity.

The morning of Storm Ashley a team of 4 provided cover on the Eildons for the Trail Outlaws Devil’s Foot half marathon involving over 100 runners. A team was out again for the Jed Ultra run on the last weekend of October, this time in much better weather.

Sunday training at the end of October took place on the slopes of Croft Park and was a focus on rigging for rescue.

Callouts

The team had a call out near Green Humbleton for a walker who had slipped and had a broken ankle. Team vehicles made it to the site and after assessment and packaging on to a stretcher the casualty was transported to a Scottish Ambulance waiting at Halterburn.

The team were called out in the evening of the 2nd November to provide assistance to a Pennine Way charity walker on Windy Rig who had sustained a leg injury. The two team Land Rovers were again able to make it to where the casualty was and after pain relief and splinting of the injured leg one of the vehicles transported the patient off the hill and to the BGH

Fund Raising

Team member Scott Thompson’s wife, Diane, ran a fund-raising bingo evening at Cornhill in aid of the team raising an impressive sum of money.

BSARU takes this opportunity to wish you all a safe and happy festive season.
