Starting on Monday 15th January, 30 members of various teams will be participating in the Montane Spine MRT Challenge North. In this event, rescuers compete against each other along the northern section of the Pennine Way whilst other non MRT members are racing alongside them in separate events.
Beginning from Hardraw in North Yorkshire, competitors have a time limit of 108 hours to get to the finish line at Kirk Yetholm crossing some of the most beautiful but difficult terrain in Britain including the Yorkshire Dales, Northumberland National Park, Hadrian’s Wall and the Cheviots. This race is for those who wish to test themselves and compete in a truly demanding race. It’s not just the ferocity of the British Winter that’s against them, their own bodies and minds will become their biggest battle.
Five of our intrepid team members set themselves the challenge to cover the 160 mile route but just to prove how attritional the training for this kind of event is, one has just had to withdraw due to an injury acquired in training, just a couple of weeks out from the start. The remaining four - Starky, Damon, Duncan and Rob are looking for sponsorship as they compete in the event that covers the northern three fifths of the Pennine Way, completing the final section in our patch.
They’re raising money for the team as they go, with funds going towards the finishing touches to the new base. They’d really appreciate your support – we’ll post details of their trackers when they get underway and you can sponsor them using this link
