Seymour Haugh's article for Kelso Life, with news about our new Mountain Rescue Base, recent callouts, fundraising and advice for hillwalkers.

New Base Update

Air testing

The electric meter is not yet in as the fitter that arrived was not qualified to install due to the fuse sizes in the building being designated industrial capacity. Instalment date is now the 7th March. The airtight check of the building has been completed successfully. Tarmac has been laid by AC Roads Ltd of Galashiels who kindly gave us a reduction of £1500 in the cost.

Montane Spine Race

On Sunday 22nd January the team went to assist in the evacuation of 1 male and 1 female competitor who had become hypothermic and were being attended to by Spine Race officials at Auchope Mountain Refuge Hut. Northumberland MRT members thought the female would need to be stretchered off the hill. However, BSARU got their 2 Landrovers to the hut and transported the casualties to the Border Hotel, Kirk Yetholm, HQ for the race.

Missing 11 Year Old

The team was involved in the widely reported search for a girl from Galashiels who went missing on Sunday 7th February. Thankfully the girl was found on Monday evening.

Bingo Night

Diane Thompson and The Cornhill Corner Shop Girls have again raised funds for us with an Eyes Down Bingo Night. The ladies specified that the £926 raised be spent on the purchase inflatable jacks for the vehicles and an additional set of Talon anchors.

Sound Advice

Fingerpost signage

Alerts from injured hill walkers often result in their 999 calls being directed to the Scottish Ambulance Service. Only once paramedics are then on scene, if they can get there, is the assistance of Mountain Rescue requested. This delay has been a concern to Scottish Mountain Rescue teams for some considerable time. To prevent this delay the BSARU is placing emergency advice plaques in prominent positions in the area that the team covers.
